THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government will launch the Covid vaccination campaign for children in the age group of 12-14 years in selected centers in the state on a pilot basis from Wednesday. The location of vaccination centers and the schedule will be announced locally.

“Ongoing examinations are the reason for the slow start of the vaccination of children aged 12 to 14. A large-scale vaccination will take place during the holidays. Proper planning will be done and parents’ concerns will be addressed in advance,” said Health Minister Veena George.

The health department will issue a detailed guideline for vaccination in the younger age group and will also coordinate with the education department to expand vaccination in children.

All children born between 2008 and 2010 are eligible for shots. The state has around 15 lakh of such children. However, children born in 2010 will become eligible on their 12th birthday. Thus, on Wednesday March 16, children born between 2008 and March 16, 2010 will receive the vaccine. Although online and on-site registration is available, slots would be provided to those booking online after the Center approves the layout on the CoWIN portal.

The Center has also approved precautionary doses for anyone over the age of 60 without comorbidities. Currently, seniors with comorbidities and front-line workers are receiving the doses.
