Hostaway Reveals Upsurge in Direct Bookings in 2022

Canada: All-in-one vacation rental management company Hostaway has released new data detailing an increase in direct vacation rental bookings over the past three years.

Direct bookings have seen a significant increase since 2020, despite other trends ‘normalizing’ to pre-Covid levels. On the Hostaway platform, the proportion of direct bookings compared to total bookings worldwide has increased from an average of 7.8% in the last quarter of 2019 to 13.5% in 2020 and 16.8% in 2022.

The value of direct bookings, processed through the Hostaway platform, quadrupled between January and December 2021.

Marcus Rader, co-founder and CEO of Hostaway, said, “In general, consumer behaviors take a long time to change, but our data shows that’s not the case with direct bookings right now. Customers are booking directly with property managers and this trend is accelerating. We see this trend as coming from real estate operators.

“They have become much more savvy with their marketing strategies and software. This in turn has attracted more value and experience driven customers who are happy to shop around for the best vacation rental. Once they have had a positive experience booking direct, they will continue to do so.

“For this reason, we do not expect direct bookings to fall below pre-pandemic levels,” he added.

The increase in this trend had started gradually before the pandemic and had grown exponentially despite the cancellation policies imposed by OTAs during this time.

At the same time, Hostaway unveiled a new upgrade to its website builder that helps property managers create promotions, reward repeat customers and attract more direct bookings. The free tool is available to customers through Hostaway’s marketplace.
