MTRCB on Regulation of Online Video Streaming Services – Manila Bulletin
The Movie & Television Review & Classification Board (MTRCB) recently released a statement regarding talks regarding expanding their jurisdiction to include online streaming services, as requested by lawmakers.
According to MTRCB President Diorella Maria “Lala” Sotto-Antonio, they will weigh the pros and cons.
“The issue will go through the process and be discussed by the board. We will assess the impact of lawmakers’ call to expand the board’s jurisdiction to cover online streaming platforms and apps and come up with a balanced and fair,” Lala said.
The statement also mentions how concerned parents have urged them to clamp down on movies, programs and videos being shown on various online streaming platforms, some of which they say should be subject to regulation.
However, other groups have countered the idea, noting that it could incentivize platform creators to collect or raise subscription fees at the expense of users.
Lala reiterated that they will balance all concerns raised by various groups.
“I assure the public that the MTRCB shares everyone’s desire to ensure that children are not exposed to content that is not age appropriate.
